about

El Palmas Music deliver another long lost Venezuelan gem, from a limelight-avoiding Venezuelan bandleader and his red-hot salsa orchestra.

There is no question that Ramón Urbina (aka Moncho) was a musical prodigy. Once Latin dance music fever took hold of him as a teenager, he knew he had to pick up an instrument, opting first for tres (guitar), before picking up the bass, various percussion instruments, piano and eventually finding the instrument which he would make his own, the trombone. Completely self-taught, he would play and learn by ear, as well as soaking up all the popular big band arrangements of the day until he himself became a composer and arranger too.

His weakness was self-promotion, and a reluctance to travel. Of the two bands he led, Ramón y su Banda Latina (which formed in the early 1970s) and Moncho Y Su Banda (which followed later that decade), he only ever recorded one album, in 1981, with the latter. It’s this album, titled Qué Bellas Son, that’s getting reissued by El Palmas Music.

Originally only 500 copies were pressed of the album, making this something of a cult classic of Caribbean-inflected salsa, cumbia and merengue that should be better known than its reputation allows.

Following on from the first single, “Las 12”, the group’s take on an iconic Cuban mambo, El Palmas Music are releasing “Buscando Una Flor”, an original composition by Ramón which shows him working in the vein of Puerto Rico’s El Gran Combo and La Sonora Ponceña, as well as Venezuela’s very own Oscar León-fronted Dimensión Latina.
This is stately salsa with punchy vocals, energised by restless piano and percussion, with Ramón’s trombone fronting a dynamite horn section.

“Buscando Una Flor” will be released by El Palmas Music on November 4, 2022

Moncho y Su Banda Charallave, Venezuela

... more
